The Expo Agroalimentaria is a yearly event organized in Irapuato, Mexico since 1996. Dedicated to agriculture, gardening and agricultural industry the event aims to put in contact and build stable business relationships between agrarian companies. It’s a place where industry players exchange information, learn about innovative production systems and commercialize products.
The Expo is a very important event for Latin America. This was Westar’s first time in the role of exhibitors with a stand, tunnels, greenhouse, and open fields. We were able to showcase our product portfolio at its best. We met with new and old customers from all over the world.
The visitors attending the event were about 120 000 people and we were able to meet with more than 1000 of them. Everyone was impressed by our newly developed varieties.
The varieties that attracted the biggest attention were our habaneros, our hybrid grey zucchini Isabella, our parthenocarpic cucumber Don Emilio and other varieties which we’ll disclose later in this article.
Isabella Zucchini
Isabella caught the eye of the zucchini connoisseurs with its amazing qualities and high produce – giving producers an average of 200-300 boxes more per hectare than most other varieties. This hybrid grey zucchini has a better disease package compared to industry leaders with tolerance to PRSV, SLVC, WMV, and ZYMV.
Tommasino tomato
Fans of tomatoes were impressed by our indeterminate cherry pear Tommasino tomato. Its fruits are very uniform and oblong, and it is best for breeding in a greenhouse. Tommasino has a great disease package that includes resistance to many viruses such as fusarium. The yield on this variety is incredible, and the plants continue to yield even after multiple harvests.
Habaneros
Our habaneros were warmly accepted by people with а taste for heat and chili. From mild sweetness to fire-breathing heat, our habaneros fill the whole taste spectrum. Our varieties have been tested in many different regions.
Cuauhtemoc jalapeno variety
Cuauhtemoc jalapeno was the greatest performer from the jalapeno families at the Expo. Cuauhtemoc is the great jalapeño variety that has also been trialed in different regions and always performed very well. Its yields are both early and very strong, maturing to exceptionally flavored spicy fruit. It’s one of the larger jalapeño varieties available, with sizes averaging around 4.5 inches (12 cm). The plant performs very well and provides great coverage for the fruit as it matures. This variety is resistant to BLS 1, 2, 3.
WS-2023 saladette tomato variety
WS- 2023 is an indeterminate-growing saladette tomato that demonstrates continuous growing and very high yields characteristic of greenhouse tomatoes. This is a great choice for different climates and markets. Each cluster averages about 6-8 fruits, yielding high-quality tomatoes. It has amazing disease resistance against F(1-3), Ma, Mi, Mj, TSWV, TY, TYLCV, Va, Vd, Fusarium Wilt (Races 1, 2, 3), Root-knot Nematodes, Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus, Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus, Verticillium Wilt (albo-atrum, dahliae), and it also contains Begomovirus-resistant gene.
Don Emilio cucumber variety
The visitors of our greenhouse were impressed by our parthenocarpic Beit alpha cucumber. This variety lacks bitterness with its thin skin, producing a truly mild and flavorful product. The flesh is firm and crunchy. All female flowers mean that growers can expect optimal high yields.
WS-4606 variety
This crown variety we exhibited has very vigorous and erect plants that perform well in cold weather and throughout the year. The bead size is fine to medium for a very smooth look, and the plant yields very uniform crowns and florets.
Golden Dome melon variety
For those of you who have a sweet tooth, the Golden Dome is the best choice with a brilliant salmon-orange colour and delicious flesh! This is a high producing, higher brix and delicious Harper melon averaging about 16 brix and excellent yield of at least 8-10 fruits per meter. Visitors of the Expo had the opportunity to see how strong Golden Dome’s vines grow.
We are still working on getting out samples and talking to the new customers. We hope Westar will be able to cooperate with many new businesses on a local and international market!
